The main reason Microsoft released DOS 6.2 was to correct
potential problems with their DOS 6.0 compression program
called DoubleSpace. However, there are some other nice
features in DOS 6.2. The reason Microsoft did not call
their new operating system DOS 6.1 is that IBM released
a version of DOS called PC-DOS 6.1.
Microsoft has two versions of DOS 6.2. If you are
already running DOS 6.0 they have an upgrade product that
they call MS-DOS 6.2 Step-Up. This can be found in
computer stores for around $10.00. You can also download
MS-DOS 6.2 Step-Up for free from a Microsoft BBS. They
call this BBS, Microsoft Product Support Download Service
(MSDL). The MSDL BBS phone number in the USA is 206-936-
6735 or in Canada 416-507-3022. To download MS-DOS 6.2
Step-Up, you will need a modem with communication
software and know how to use it. If you need help
using a modem, you might want to consider my new work
called, The Modem Workshop Handbook. It is designed to
get people online fast.
The MS-DOS 6.2 Step-Up is only for people who are already
using DOS 6.0 on their system. For those who are using
an earlier version of DOS, Microsoft has the full MS-DOS
6.2 Upgrade product. The MS-DOS 6.2 Upgrade product must
be purchased.
